DONQ Boulangerie, Tokyo

The number of bakeries have been in the rise here in Singapore. What they call as Artisan Bakeries such as Maison Kayser at Scotts Square, Paul Bakery at Ngee Ann City and Baker and Cook at Hillcrest, DONQ (located at Takashimaya basement) is the new player on the block.

DONQ (pronounced as DONK), a Japanese-French bakery is not an unfamiliar name in Japan. With 180 outlets in Japan, it has a long history, with it's first store opening in 1905 under the name - Fuji Bread, named after the boss Yukio Fuji. The name was later changed to DONQ in 1966.

The store I went to was located at the Ikebukuro Seibu departmental store basement food street.

Besides the popular french breads like the baguette, batard or boule, DONQ also carries bread loaves catering to the Japanese market who likes their bread soft and fluffy.

The breads all look very tempting! A bread sells at about JPY200 - 300 each, but you definitely would need some self control in the shop, in order not to overbuy (or risk making a hole in your pocket!)

I bought 3 breads in the end..   clockwise from top: Walnut bread, multigrain raisin bread and onion cheese bread. Not cheap, total bill came out to be around JPY700 (SGD11). Maybe it's time for me to visit the Singapore Takashimaya basement branch.

  1. DONQ management & webmaster should think about an english language option for their website....they maybe do not care about having foreign customers.....
